What We Do
Lean Manufacturing     CGL has developed and we continue to practice Lean each and everyday. Since 2000, Lean has become part of CGL’s strategy and culture.

What is Lean? Lean involves eliminating waste, whether it be time, materials, efficiency or processes. Why lean? With increased global competition, lower costs are required to survive and remain viable. Our world class customers can readily see and know we are capable of controlling our costs. CGL’s manufacturing environment is very visual through the use of Toyota production system techniques. What are some of the Lean tools used at CGL? Five S, Kaizen, Cellular manufacturing, One piece flow, Kanbans, pull systems, SMED (single minute exchange of die), TPM (total preventative maintenance), Poka yoke (mistake proofing), shadow boards for tools and CI (Continuous Improvement). How did Lean become part of our culture? With the support of Management, training of all employees, and effectively communicating and demonstrating our successes we were able to get everyone on board. Measurements and quantitative evidence are very important elements. The concept of Lean is based on trust, respect and caring which are all powerful human characteristics. Can and do all our employees participate in Lean? Very much so, and here are just a few examples – submit CI suggestions to reduce cost or eliminate waste, participate in 5S activities, volunteer in Kaizen activities, the daily use of Kanban systems and also return tools etc to their proper place for the next time to eliminate wasted time searching.

Finally, Continuous Improvement is a constant as we will never reach perfection.
